The book Eternal Drunkness is an intimate study of the dynamics associated with alcohol consumption. Produced over the course of five months, it grew out of the author’s repeated encounters with daily drinking, which is widely accepted and socially normalised as a form of recreation and relaxation. This period coincided with his own first conscious month-long abstinence from alcohol as an attempt to map out the dynamic between abstinence and occasional drinking. During this period, the book sparked in him a personal debate on the boundary between consuming alcohol and a state where he was, in his own words, “consumed by alcohol”. The resulting photo book presents a visual narrative documenting the existential nature of repeated non-sobriety and one’s own inebriation. It captures moments of late-night journeys home from the pub, solitary roaming, games of dice and, through the blurred haze of intoxication, exposes anonymous objects and figures from these wandering escapades.

Jakub Pavlík

is a visual artist who works primarily with the medium of photography and artists’ books. The common denominator for his projects and artists’ books is the often raw documentary form, which existentially incorporates the author as an integral part of the whole project, not just as an objective observer, underscoring his narration. He works on subjective themes with an emphasis on his own imagination and the explicit openness of visual testimony.
